What is Brahma Muhurta?

Brahma muhurta is a Sanskrit word composed of two words Brahma and Muhurta. Brahma means sacred or holy or creator god or the source and Muhurta means time. Brahma Muhurta, therefore known as the time of god, scared time or creator hour or time of almighty. It is the time perfect to perceive knowledge.

The Brahma Muhurta time between 4 am and 6 am is said to have the highest positive and healing power inside and outside our body. Doing exercise during this period benefits our body a lot and gets rid of useless laziness. Similarly, one can get the best silent and peaceful time to plan up day and productive work without disturbance.

Ayurveda states that there are three kinds of Doshas in the human body known as :

Vata (Air and Ether)

Pitta (Fire and Water)

Kapha (Earth and Water)

Within 24 hours these doshas have different periods of predominance. Each of them Dosha increases or decreases in the human body according to the cycles of time and the change in the environment. The last part of the night is dominated by Vata Dosha that wakes up in the morning with enhanced flexibility, functioning of organs, and a balanced body and mind.

It is also believed that in earlier times, Yogis and Sages used to wake up during this time, and perform Yajna and recitation of Vedas. It is believed that at this time, all the gods roam around the earth. So, God gets pleased quickly if prayed in this time.

Exact Time of Brahma Muhurta or Brahma Muhurta Timing :

Brahma Muhurta Timing consists of two muhurtas, which is about 96 minutes before sunrise. Each Muhurta is about 48 minutes and 30 Kalas. It is the second last muhurta before sunrise. So, the Brahma Muhurta Time lasts for 1 hour and 36 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before sunrise. As the time of sunrise differs each day, so Brahma Muhurta Time also differs. For instance, if the sunrise is at 6:00 am, then the Brahma Muhurta Time begins at 04:24 am, and if the sunrise is at 07:00 am, then the Brahma Muhurta Time begins at 05:24 am, and so on.

It is the last stage of the night before sunrise and is considered tremendously favorable and powerful. At this Muhurta a great shift in energies occur. It is believed that spiritual activities accomplished during Brahma Muhurta Time have a greater effect than in any other part of the day. It is most beneficial for all practices of yoga and appropriate for mediation, worship, or any other religious practices. It is also said that one’s practice will yield deeper and faster results when performed at this time. Therefore, spiritual activities are recommended at this time.
